About the Project
Strengthening citizen participation is crucial in the digital age to increase the resilience of the democratic model. Digital competencies and political agency are particularly important in this regard. This project aims, firstly, to raise young people’s awareness of how AI is used in democratic processes and in state-citizen interactions. Secondly, it seeks to foster youth participation by involving young people in deliberations about the future of democracy. Through innovative forms of engagement based on narrative foresight and art, this project hopes to spark debate and place the future of Swiss democracy in the hands of young people. The project — perhaps somewhat provocatively — challenges the widespread deployment of AI technologies in democracy.
The project conducted over 30 workshops across all three Swiss language regions at secondary schools and higher education institutions. Art schools in three cantons translated the resulting stories into visual illustrations for public dissemination. The project concluded with public exhibitions and fictional court trials examining the role of AI in democracy, held in Bern, Geneva, Zurich, and Lugano.
